Migration within the context of the Olympic Games is above all an adaptation of already existing migration patterns and not so much a discontinuity with the past; 2.
That means that, for instance, the number of foreign athletes in Italy and Spain is expected to grow over time, whilst the opposite applies to countries like Argentina and Brazil; 3. The pool of foreign-born Olympians is thus expected to have become more diverse; and 4. Methodology To be able to map patterns of Olympic migration, one ideally needs detailed biographic data on every individual athlete of all participating countries.
The motivation both theoretic and pragmatic for this selection is fourfold: 1. Diversity Having demonstrated that the Summer Olympics have not become inherently more migratory, we come to the third hypothesis: the pool of foreign-born athletes is becoming increasingly diverse. Table 2 Diversity D among foreign-born athletes Full size table.
Direction In the remainder of this article, we will highlight two epochs of migration that occurred over the course of Olympic history since the Second World War through a country-of-origin perspective. Table 3 Cross-continental movements of foreign-born Olympic athletes Full size table.
